The Som Lab sits within the California Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit (CACFWRU), which is a cooperative venture between California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, the California Department of Fish and & Wildlife, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Wildlife Management Institute. It was established at Humboldt State University in 1967 and is affiliated with the College of Natural Resources and Sciences. The lab conducts research projects to support the cooperators and provides training and research opportunities for graduate students in the natural resource sciences.
The majority of our projects focus on anadromous fish species, and how statistical, biological, and/or physical models can be used to not only answer important ecological questions, but also be used as support tools to help resource managers make better decisions. Our projects improve methods for modeling aquatic habitats, develop tools to optimize regulated river discharge planning, better understand parasite transmission and disease risk for Pacific salmon, fish movement dynamics within river systems, explore recolonization after restored fish passage, etc.
